How Miniature Donkeys First Came to America

In 1929, when a US stockbroker by the name of Robert Green, was visiting Europe, he heard about the sweet little miniature donkeys that populated the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Sicily off Italy.  These little creatures were not pets, but were used to grind grain inside peasants' huts.  Sight unseen, Mr. Green had six jennets and one jack shipped to his farm in New Jersey.  Falling in love with these animals, he imported more over the years.  His famous quote describing them is, "Miniature Donkeys possess the affectionate nature of a Newfoundland, the resignation of a cow, the durability of a mule, the courage of a tiger, and the intellectual capability only slightly inferior to man's."
